Chinese Flower International Trade Status Analysis in 2007

In 2007, Chinese international flower trade was affected like other industries by some negative factors such as the appreciation of the Renminbi, the increase cost of domestic energy and increased labor costs etc, however, China is still showing rapid development in the export of flowers according to Chinese 2007 Customs statistics. Chinese total import and export trade amount of flowers achieve a new high record for 2007 with the annual total import and export of flower products exceeded 200 million U.S. dollars. Of the total, exports amounted to nearly 126 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 23.86%, however, the annual export growth rate decreased by 12.26%. Imports were nearly 82 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 20.52% and the annual import growth rate increased 16.57% from the prior year. (Figure 1, Figure 2).

Pot plant, fresh cut flowers, fresh-cut leaves exports continue dominate the seven major flower export categories, which accounted for 27.84%, 24.25% and 20.56% of the total flower exports (Figure 3). Seedling exports were a new force which suddenly rose in 2007, accounting for 17.79% of total flower exports.
Japan, The Netherlands, South Korea, United States and Hong Kong remain the top five countries for Chinese flower exports. The above-mentioned five countries and regions accounted for flower exports of the total by 38.10 %, 19.10 %, 10.27 %t, 7.24 %, 3.90 % (Figure 4).
Bulbs and seedlings are two flower categories which occupy a major position in China flower imports accounted for 45.01% and 32.94 %, respectively of total imports (Figure 5). Chinese main imports of flowers are from the Netherlands, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea and Chile, which accounted for 45.47 %, 16.89 %t, 15.09 %, 4.26 %, 2.94%, respectively, in total flower imports (Figure 6).

The top five provinces and cities for Chinese flower exports in 2007 were by Guangdong、Zhejiang、Fujian、Yunnan、Shanghai, which accounted for about 79% of the total exports. Zhejiang export growth rate reached 54 %, increasing to the second place. Henan and Hainan exports scale is increasing with the export growth rate increasing 133.6% and 66.7 %, respectively, while export volume of Shanghai continues to show a declining trend.

The top five provinces and cities of Chinese flowers import amount in 2007 were Yunnan, Guangdong, Beijing, Shanghai and Zhejiang provinces (cities), whose import volume accounted for about 96% of the total Chinese flower imports for 2007. Flower import volume and growth rate in Sichuan and Heilongjiang province was the largest among the top 10 provinces and cities in total import volume. The import volume in Beijing had a reduction of about 11%.
